Once you have an adult, the object is to get married.
You can meet other NPC tamas at the various locations on the device. The locations vary between versions, as do the NPCs available. They are also unlocked at various stages in the generations.

Four inheritable genes:
Outside of first generation, unlike on the traditional tamagotchis, the care you give your tama has no impact on the new tama you raise. It’s 100% based on genes. (In first generation your “starter tamagotchi” is based on care mistakes.)
Two Sitter functions - you can leave your Tama with its parents until 5pm, for free. Or drop it at the Hotel for 10 GP/hour, until 7pm. If using the Hotel make sure to pick them up by 6:59pm, otherwise they will come home angry, with happiness and stats depleted. There is no penalty for failing to pick up your Tama from their parents.
